ST. PETER'S BASILICA

Bringing St. Peter’s Basilica to the World with an AI‑Powered Digital Twin

Preserving and enhancing St. Peter’s Basilica through AI, photogrammetry, and immersive storytelling, the Vatican—together with Microsoft, Iconem, Valorem Reply, and Sagepath Reply—transformed how global audiences can access and experience this iconic spiritual and architectural landmark. By creating a highly accurate 3D digital twin and an Azure‑based interactive web platform, the project blends cultural conservation with cutting‑edge technology to make the Basilica virtually explorable at scale.

The Challenge

Ahead of the 2025 Jubilee, the Vatican needed a way to broaden access to St. Peter’s Basilica for a global audience while also strengthening long‑term preservation efforts. The challenge was to convey the Basilica’s historical, artistic, and spiritual significance through a digital experience that could support millions of visitors, mirror the physical structure with high fidelity, and satisfy the needs of diverse stakeholders—from Church leaders and historians to technologists and educators.

The Solution

Valorem Reply and Sagepath Reply, in collaboration with Microsoft and Iconem, created an immersive, web‑based experience centered on a highly accurate 3D digital twin of St. Peter’s Basilica, built from an Azure‑based point cloud representation of the modern structure. The platform weaves together audio, video, time‑lapse models, and interactive storytelling to narrate the life of St. Peter and the physical evolution of the Basilica, while AI‑driven tools perform structural analysis to inform ongoing preservation. Design Thinking workshops ensured the experience aligned with stakeholder and audience needs, and the solution’s scalable architecture was designed to handle high‑traffic moments like the Jubilee, delivering a reliable, high‑fidelity experience to visitors worldwide.

The Impact

The digital twin significantly expanded global engagement by allowing Catholics and other visitors around the world to virtually explore St. Peter’s Basilica and deepen their understanding of its history, art, and spiritual importance. AI‑powered structural analysis now provides a powerful tool for maintaining and preserving the Basilica for future generations, while the platform’s scalable model supports surges in traffic around major events such as the 2025 Jubilee. Beyond St. Peter’s, the initiative has become a reference model for how AI and immersive technology can support cultural preservation and access, redefining how people experience and connect with heritage sites digitally.
